Color Drenching – What It Is and How To Use It

Color Drenching is an exciting painting concept that simply involves “drenching” an entire room in the same color.

If you look around your home today, you’ll likely notice that moldings, window frames, doors, and ceilings are a different color than the walls. However, when using color drenching, these elements should all be painted in the same color.

What benefits can be gained from this technique? Here’s an explanation along with some examples of how it can look!

Benefits of Color Drenching

Color drenching is not only incredibly striking and impactful, but it’s also a fantastic technique for making a smaller room feel larger.

In fact, when the ceiling and walls are painted in different colors, it’s very easy for the eye to perceive where the walls end and the ceiling begins. In other words, the brain easily registers the actual ceiling height of the room.

Example of how a different color on the ceiling than the walls highlights where the walls end and ceiling starts.

However, if you paint both the ceiling and walls in the same color, the transition points blend together, making it more difficult for the eye to determine where the walls end. This results in the room feeling much larger than it actually is.

The cool thing about color drenching is that it works even with really dark colors, which also creates a cozier atmosphere.

I would recommend using this technique with more colorful paint for the best effect (neutrals works too). But using this technique with white paint can give a similar effect, but with a very clinical feel.

Summary

Anyone can use this painting technique, and even if you have a room that’s already large, color drenching can create an incredibly striking effect.

Be sure to choose the right type of paint for each surface when painting—wall paint, ceiling paint, and woodwork paint for moldings and doors.

Good luck!
